The story of Alaró

Alaró has a centuries-old history that gave the quiet village a lot of character. In 1241, the small town was first mentioned in a document under the name Oloron. Historians suggest that the name of the village has either an Iberian or Arabic origin, with the Arabic term Hisn al-rum can be translated as "Roman Fortress".

Economically, both mining and shoe making played a significant role. Today, the inhabitants of Alarò live mainly on agriculture.

The Castle of Alaró is characterized by its outstanding strategic importance in the history of Majorca. As the base of the last independence fighters and because of their laborious conquest by the troops of Alfonso III of Aragón, the castle symbolizes resistance and the patriotic struggle of the Mallorcans over their homeland.
