The municipality of Selva is part of the Balearic island of Mallorca and has a population of almost 4,000.Selva is therefore one of the medium sized cities in Mallorca and is located in the north of the island. The municipality of Selvas is located at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains and is known for its hilly landscape. Next to the mountain up and downhill in Selva, the medium sized town is characterized by its small lanes and proves not only that Mallorca has many different facets. Unlike the places east or south, Selva is embedded in a rather barren and sprawling but beautiful landscape. In addition, the place is in the middle of a nature reserve. Contrary to the sea views, such as in Sa Coma or Porto Cristo, the holidaymakers can look forward to a view of the mountains and the landscape of the nature reserve.Other parts of the municipality of Selva are the villages of Caimari, Binibona, Moscari and Biniamar.
History of Selva
The city appears in the documents for the first time in the 11th century. The name Selvas first appeared in the Llibre del Repartiment in 1232 as Alquería alcheria Xilvar. The name of the city is, according to ethnologists, from the Latin Silva, which is to be translated with forest. This derivation is very well understood due to the location and environment of the place. In the beginnings of the city ruled Arab rule. This ended, however, when the island of Mallorca was divided by King Jaume I. He gave the country two knights with a half each. Already since the 14th century the division of the city districts consists of the following two parts: amarata, Valella and Es Puig.In 1300 the city was founded by King Jaume II.
