Location and surroundings

The graceful holiday resort of Cala Ratjada, the Rochen Bay, is located in the idyllic north-east of the island of Mallorca, on a peninsula. Surrounded by many hills and rocky coasts, the region is an ideal starting point for hiking and biking.

Originally built in the 17th century as a port of Capdepera, it was quickly developed into the main fishing port of Majorca, next to Palma de Mallorca. Fishing is still an important factor here today. In the 1930s Cala Ratjada became a popular refuge for exiles from Germany, mainly antifascist artists.

Today, Cala Ratjada has an exciting nightlife for both young and old, but Cala Ratjada has a picturesque environment and a beautiful landscape diversified offer of clubs, bars and restaurants to offer further highlights.

The location, about 80 km from Palma, brings proximity to the neighboring island of Menorca and this allows a trip across the Mediterranean with a speedboat to Ciutadella in about 75 minutes. Furthermore, there are some historically relevant and listed buildings, such as the lobster houses, in the harbor to admire. For explorers and adventurers, hikes over the hilly landscape to the various bays nearby: Cala Gat, a small bay with a beautiful natural beach.

Cala Ratjada

Translated, the name Cala Ratjada means "the Rochenbucht".It gives an indication of the long history of the village as Fischerdorf, which has developed into a popular holiday destination over time. Cala Ratjada has maintained its rustic character despite its increasingly important tourism. When the international guests leave the Balearic Island after the summer season, Cala Ratjada is again transformed into the small, tranquil fishing village in the middle of Capdepera, in the north-east of Majorca. Despite the fact that the place welcomes thousands of visitors year after year, it has been spared the great boom in hotel construction. Today, the cozy atmosphere which the small fishing boats, which anchor at the harbor, gives him is a good thing. Especially the German tourists have closed the small town in the middle of pine forests and unspoilt nature.

Cala Ratjada is located about 80 kilometers from the capital Palma de Mallorca on a peninsula in the region of Llevant . Directly in the town attracts the city beach Son Moll the Badeurlauber with its clear water. In the immediate vicinity are the beaches Cala Agulla and Cala Gat . By car or public transport, the bays of Cala Mesquida and Font de sa Cala are also within easy reach.

History of Cala Ratjada

The history of the fishing village of Cala Ratjada dates back to the 17th century, when Capdepera inhabitants founded a port. As a result, fishermen settled down, which mainly caught rays and crawfish.Cala Ratjada is still the second most important fishing port on the Balearic Island to Palma de Mallorca.

Cala Ratjada reached a certain fame in the thirties of the 20th century, when exiled antifascist writers and artists from the German-speaking countries settled in a sort of colony. After the takeover of power by Franco in July 1936 most of them succeeded in escaping from the island unmolested. With the Hostal Ca's Bombu opened as early as 1885 a first hotel in the small fishing village, as it is still managed by the family Esteva today. The great tourist boom in the seventies, which was accompanied by the construction of large hotel facilities on the island, has largely escaped Cala Ratjada and thus retained its original locality.

Top5 travel tips for Cala Ratjada

The harbor , which is located in the southern part of the village and is protected by a concrete wall, is still the centerpiece of the original fishing village. Its pretty promenade leads directly to the bay of Cala Gat, along the promenade line up restaurants, cafes and bars. From the harbor wall, a great view of the sea opens up. The port of Cala Ratjada is the starting point for some excursion boats in the direction of Cala Millor and Porto Cristo .By means of a speed boat, the town of Ciutadella can also be reached on the neighboring island of Menorca within 75 minutes.

The village of Cala Ratjada is still reminiscent of the great economic importance of fishing. Already in the 17th century were caught in front of its coast above all scents and crawfish. A little farther east of the harbor, you can still see the historical lobster houses . These white, parallelepipedal buildings are protected as historical monuments. They were formerly used by the fishermen to keep the lobsters alive until they are sold in large seawater pools.

High on a hill east of the village, the Villa March is perched. Here the Juan March 1911, known as a tobacco smuggler, real estate trader and later banker, had his Sa Torre Cega retreat built. It stands on the ruins of a 15th century watchtower. A visit to the magnificent 60,000 square meter park surrounding the villa is recommended. It was designed by the British garden architect Russel Page. If you are lucky on its paths, you can discover a valuable collection of forty contemporary sculptures spread across the park. The sculptures are from the hands of famous artists such as Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin. After the works of art were brought to the Museu d 'Art Expanyol Contemporani in November 2001, they returned to their places in the park of the Villamarch in August 2010.In addition to the sculptures, a permanent exhibition of works by the avant-garde will also be shown.

The easternmost point of the island of Majorca is the lighthouse Far de Capdepera , built in the middle of the 19th century. It is located on the peninsula of Punta de Capdepera in the midst of a rugged rocky landscape dotted with small bays. Nearby is the ruin of a medieval watch tower, the Torre Embucada .

Idyllically located between cliffs is the small bay of Cala Gat north of the port of Cala Ratjada. The bay has an approximately 80 meter long and seven meter wide deck area surrounded by a wooded rocky coast. For smaller children, the beach is less suitable, since the water drops here quite strongly into the sea. But the bay, which is up to 20 meters deep, is a fascinating dive area that is also suitable for beginners. It offers an exciting underwater landscape with caves and grottoes as well as a great variety of marine life. In addition to mussels and snails, there are also squids, moray eels and blue neon fish.
