Pollença (Castilian Pollensa) is a municipality on the Balearic island of Mallorca. Approximately 16,200 inhabitants live here and the proportion of foreigners in 2006 was 22.9%.The municipality includes the places Aeròdrom Militar, Bellresguard, Cala Sant Vicenç, Ca'n Singala, El Vilà, Les Palmeres, La Font, Port de Pollenca and the same place Pollenca. Within the municipality, the population is concentrated in three main areas of settlement, and most of the inhabitants live in the capital of the same name, which is about seven kilometers from the coast, in Port de Pollenca and in Cala Sant Vicenç. The municipality with a size of about 150 km2 includes, among others, the entire peninsula Formentor.

The town of Pollença, located in the fertile Huerta de Pollenca valley, surrounded by the mountains and a few kilometers from the coast, has a population of about 9,000 and is referred to as the "Cultural Capital of the North".This name refers to the north of Majorca, where the place is located. The town owes its name to its many art galleries and the famous traditional music festival. In addition, the superficial appearance of the city probably contributes to this image: the ocher-colored quarrystone house facades and the small, narrow streets as well as the beautifully decorated balconies give the impression that an artist was at work here. The city cafés, whose seats are shaded by plane trees, reinforce this impression in addition - Pollença looks partly as painted.

History of Pollença

The history of Pollença can certainly be described as long: traces of settlements on the coast go back far into the past.It is controversial when the place Pollença was actually founded. One of the most common assumptions, however, is that the inhabitants of a Roman settlement called Pollentia, which must have been located near today's Alcúdia, relocated after their destruction and also brought the name. Another proof of the old age of the town of Pollença is the plant of the city center. This has a Moorish influence, although many buildings were built only in the 17th and 18th centuries.
