Artà is one of the 53 municipalities in Mallorca and is located in the north-east of the largest Spanish Balearic island. It belongs to the region of Llevant and is located about 60 km from the capital Palma de Mallorca. The Massís d'Artà, which is the highest massif of the eastern mountain chains of the Llevant region, accounts for more than half the municipal area. In the west, the commune borders with the Bay of Alcúdia and in the north with the Mediterranean Sea.

The coast stretches over 25 kilometers. On an area of approx.140 km2 live approximately 7,500 people in the municipality. The majority of the population, about 6,000 people, lives in the small town of Artà, which is the administrative center of the municipality. The official language is Spanish and Catalan. The municipality and above all the valley landscape of the Massís d'Artà are characterized by the cultivation of fig, almond and carob trees.

In addition, the municipal area is characterized by extensive uninhabited areas and in the mountains are predominantly olive tree cultures. July is the driest month in Artà, which is otherwise climatically characterized by year-round precipitation. In October, the highest rainfall is measured.

History of Artà

The first records of Artà are dated to 1232, still under the name "Yartân" in the Llibre de repartiment de mallorca (Jaume I). This name originates from the Arabic word for garden - "Gertan". The landscaped landscape was already populated with the beginnings of the settlement of Majorca.

It is also assumed that the fortress, which is situated on a hill above the city, already arose before the maturity of the property by Islamic-Arabic cultures. This fortress was known both from the 10th to the 13th century, that is, in the Arab era of the commune, as well as under the later Catalan domination under the name of Almudaina. This name is the Arabic word for castle orFortress. The fortress, which is about one meter thick, with its main tower, Sant Miguel, now surrounds the pilgrimage church of the Santuari de Sant Salvador where a wooden Romanesque statue of the Virgin Mary can be seen. This was brought to the island, according to tradition, during the conquest of the Balearic Island by Jaume I, one of the most important monarchs of the period and the Spanish Middle Ages.

The Yartan Peninsula was one of thirteen parts of Majorca during the Moorish and Arabic periods. The Catalan conquest, or after the arrival of the Premonstratensians, the city of Artà was founded in the 13th century. The Premonstratensians founded the Priory of Santa Maria del Bellpuig. This land estate is located a little to the southwest of Artà and from there, the present city area was parceled and populated. This urban area was called "the farms of Almudaina", which is why the city was still known as Almudaina until the 15th century, before the name was changed to Artà, which had previously been located throughout the district.

Top 5 Tips for Artà

In addition to the fortress on the Calvary, which surrounds the Sanctuary of San Salvador, a walk through the center of Artà is a must if you spend your holiday: at Plaça Espanya you will find a small museum with exhibits from the time of the Talayot- Culture and the Romans.

You will find the way to the imposing fortified church by the signposting within the city. But you can also follow the splendid and widely visible arch (Transfiguración del Señor) below the fortress. It should be noted that parking a car in the old town is almost impossible.

In addition, the stone steps shaded by cypresses to the Sanctuary of Santuari are an attraction that you must not miss! The breathtaking view from the fully accessible wall crowns the ascent.

Especially in May, when the fruit trees bloom, the visitor should also make an excursion to the Ermita de Betlem. It is especially the way there, which is worthwhile. This stretches through a beautiful and idyllic valley and continues on a narrow serpentine road over a mountain range. From this peak you can see the Colonia de Sant Père and the Bay of Alcudia, and if the weather is right, you can even reach Cap Formentor. Within walking distance, you can reach the coast between Colonia de Sant Père and Betlem via the sacred source Font de S'Ermita.

In addition, the Cala Torta, a bay that is far away from every population and on the north coast, is a popular destination. She is also popular with, but by no means only, nude bathing fans. The glassy water invites you to swim and as the beach is only slightly falling, it is best suited for children.

Also worthy of note are the famous caves of Artà. These belong to the municipality of the town, but are about 10 km from Artà.

Sport and leisure in Artà

In and around Artà there are many different possibilities for sports and leisure activities. There is the possibility to take a boat from Artà to Cap Ferrutx: you can watch the island from the sea or jump into the refreshing water and swim. For the reason that the current is low, this bathing experience is also very suitable for children.

There are also approx.5 km from Artà, a golf course in Capdepera and a golf club in Canyamel. This is located about 7 km from Artà. Also worth a trip to the old monastery Torre de Canyamel. This has its own brewery and offers you unconventional dishes like suckling pig and other delicacies.
